Michael L. Long, O.D.
Dr. Long is a licensed optometrist with more than 30 years of experience, mostly in North San Diego County. He specializes in wellness eye exams which check the health of the eye, and is trained to diagnose many common eye problems and diseases. These exams are an excellent way to detect many vision and eye problems such as glaucoma and macular degeneration while still in their early stages. Early detection may prevent or delay vision loss. Working closely with the ophthalmologist, Dr. Long assists in the management of these and other eye conditions. The eye exam also provides the opportunity for Dr. Long to conduct a refraction. A refraction helps determine if a correction in vision is indicated. To improve the patient’s vision through non-invasive techniques, Dr. Long has been trained to prescribe and fit lenses, both eyeglasses and contact lens. Prescriptions for contacts and/or eyeglasses are written at the end of the refractive exam. The patient’s lifestyle is considered and additional prescriptions may be written that will address specific lifestyle needs such as, heavy computer use, sporting activities and hobbies. Dr. Long’s goal is to find solutions to patient vision problems through the use of prescription eyewear and assist the medical doctor (usually the ophthalmologist) in long-term vision care of the patient.
Dr. Long was raised in Kentucky, coming to Oceanside during the Vietnam War as a Naval Officer practicing optometry at Camp Pendleton. He has served our community through active involvement in numerous service and business organizations over the years including being the former Director of the Carlsbad Chamber of Commerce and Chairman of the Tri-City Medical Center “Golf ‘Fore’ Your Heart” fund raiser. Dr. Long resides in the community of Vista with his wife Debbie. He is an avid golfer and enjoys spending time with his family and young grandson.
